Elizabeth Bond’s research explores the ways 18th-century newspapers, and especially the letters to the editor that were published within them, facilitated the spread of Enlightenment ideas. Employing quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques, her work explores the important role networks played in shaping the public’s access to, interactions with, and responses to information in the context of 18-century France. By bringing digital humanities approaches to bear on questions central to the cultural history of the Enlightenment, her work provides exciting possibilities for quantifying, explaining, and visualizing information exchange in the early modern world.
