Congrats to TDAI Faculty, Dr. Quiring and Dr. Chan on a $1M NOAA grant

Dr. Steven Quiring, TDAI Faculty member, and Dr. Chan recently obtained a $1.03M three-year grant to improve subseasonal-to-seasonal weather forecasting. The grant is with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Environmental Modeling Center and Physical Sciences Laboratory as collaborators,

Together, they will research how uncertainties in land surface initial conditions affect S2S forecasts. To do this, they will explore combining land and atmospheric information with all-sky geostationary satellite infrared observations.

The project runs from Aug 2026-Jul 2029 and is called “Will Improving Land States Benefit S2S Forecasts? Novel Assessments Using Realistic Land State Uncertainties and Strongly-Coupled Land-Atmosphere All-Sky Satellite Infrared Radiance Data Assimilation.”
