TDAI is excited to offer AI in Your Research, a new hands-on workshop series designed to help Ohio State researchers integrate cutting-edge AI tools into their scholarly work. These intensive workshops are held over two days, with five hours of instruction each day.
The Machine Learning in Your Research session, held May 27–28, focuses on the technical foundations and practical implementation of machine learning methods for research. This interactive, application-focused workshop will guide participants through building predictive and interpretable models in Python using research-style datasets.
Participants will gain experience moving from raw data to meaningful insights while developing a strong understanding of model evaluation, performance comparison, and responsible application of machine learning in research contexts.
Topics covered include:
- Understanding the core concepts behind supervised and unsupervised machine learning
- Overview of common machine learning models and when to use them
- Data preprocessing, feature engineering, and train/test splitting
- Model evaluation, validation, and avoiding overfitting
- Interpreting model outputs and understanding feature importance
- Hands-on tutorials for building machine learning workflows in Python
- Comparing model performance across different approaches
- Techniques for classification, regression, clustering, and dimensionality reduction
- Best practices for applying machine learning methods responsibly in research contexts
- Building end-to-end workflows that participants can adapt to their own research questions
