The Sensing-Driven Collaborative Science community of practice is pleased to present Dr. Rohit Mukherjee (Pacific Northwest National Lab) on Monday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. in Derby Hall 1186 as he presents a talk entitled "Mapping and Monitoring Surface Water and Flooding Using Satellite Data and Deep Learning."

Abstract:

Climate change and urban expansion are leading to significant shifts in water resources and escalating flood risks. As these environmental pressures intensify, effective monitoring becomes crucial for resource management and disaster preparedness. The combination of satellite data and deep learning offers powerful tools for tracking environmental changes at both global and local scales.

Mukherjee's research focuses on mapping and monitoring surface water dynamics globally and flooding in urban areas. He has developed training and validation datasets from multiple satellite sources, including the Urban Flood Observation dataset with hand-labeled data from 14 urban flooding events worldwide. Simultaneously, to reduce dependency on costly hand labels, he trained deep learning models on Sentinel-1 data using water labels from DynamicWorld in a weakly supervised approach that produces locally accurate surface water maps. His work explores the trade-offs between various satellite data sources, sampling strategies, and deep learning techniques to effectively monitor permanent surface water and flooding events in different contexts.

Mukherjee's work offers insights into human-environment interactions based on satellite data, complementing traditional physical models. By investigating the impacts of expanding built-up land and climate change on surface water dynamics, his research aims to improve human understanding of these complex environmental processes.
