Nationally, there is growing momentum to offer data science as an alternative to Algebra II and to integrate data-related tasks and spreadsheet skills into traditional science courses. This program builds on that movement through the STEMcoding project, which works to re-imagine introductory science and math education using authentic, data-centered activities.
STEMcoding has developed data science curriculum since 2017, beginning with what became the Earth Day Hour of Code activity and expanding through multiple curriculum development grants. This summer training marks the first opportunity to engage with the full curriculum in a structured continuing education format.
The curriculum emphasizes spreadsheet-based data science using Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, with classroom-ready activities that support data analysis and interpretation. Activities align with an introductory Excel industry credential, preparing students in year-long data science courses to pursue the certification exam.
Course cost includes software participants may use in their classroom. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate documenting up to 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
