Data Science for Women Summer Camp


The Translational Data Analytics Institute hosts a free summer camp designed for young women in grades 8-10 to explore data science and analytics.  It’s an exciting, fast-growing field centered on scientific methods and processes for extracting new knowledge from data. Students who learn these skills can combine them with an unimaginably wide range of interests, from business and biology to health care and education, to city planning and social services. Over the course of four half-days in the summer, campers will:

  • Work in student teams and with mentors to develop analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Learn from scientists and students across the data spectrum
  • Discuss gender, race, and cultural biases (in data and in our community)
  • Explore educational and career opportunities in data science and analytics

What: 2021 Data Science for Women Summer Camp
Where: Virtual / Online
When: July 13-16, 2021 from 9 am – 12:30 pm daily
Cost: The camp is free, although attendance all four days is required

Call for Volunteers


Volunteers are needed to help the campers work in small groups (virtual tables).  It is the personal moments when volunteers help campers through data challenges or questions that truly makes a difference.  Below are full details on the sessions we’re seeking help during (along with what the volunteers will do).  A brief orientation for volunteers will also be scheduled for mid-June, where we’ll discuss each session.


Volunteers are welcome to choose any sessions that fit their interests, schedule, etc.  Email Jenna at before May 28 to confirm your interest.


Tuesday, July 13  

9:40 a.m. to 10:05 a.m. – Data Game 

·        Have everyone wear funny hat, scarf, or face piece at the start of the meeting

·        Split into small groups and have each table describe what they have on / what they see

·        Volunteers: Types up data points (names, colors, words used, etc.) from your group and be prepared to share what words were used


10:55 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Data Collection Activity 

·        Campers take 10 minutes to complete a Data Collection Activity sheet away from their computer

·        Discuss the data they collected in small groups (with pre-loaded questions and helpers) 

·        Volunteers: Take notes on data collected by your group and be prepared to share


Wednesday, July 14  

9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. – Brain imaging and data 

·        Will mail clay for them to create a brain out of clay-like material 

·        Speakers will discuss MRI/FMRI data and brain areas data analysis 

·        Volunteers: Help tables through questions about the clay molds (NO brain imaging experience needed)


11:05 a.m. to 11:25 a.m. – Data Game  

·        What is going on with this graph 

·        Volunteers: Guide the conversation with your group


11:25 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. – Data Biases 

·        Play video on Gender Shades / Bias in Data 

·        Discuss how statistics can also have gender or racial biases (as a group) 

·        In tables, discuss how this makes you feel and what we could do as a society to change biases 

·        Volunteers: Guide the conversation with your group


Thursday, July 15 

9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. – Game Theory & coding (2.5 hours)  

·        Will work through simple game theory exercises

·        Wil involve introductory coding using Netlogo

·        Volunteers: Will help tables through questions and/or analysis.  Introductory coding experience required of volunteers.


Friday, July 16 

10:35 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Data Analysis with Census Data: What is the Best Job  

·        Will go through activity together as a larger group

·       Then, work in small groups to evaluate data and discuss

·        Volunteers: Guide the conversation with your group and be prepared to share what group discussed


11:55 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. – Data Game on visualization 

·        In tables, campers will pick any piece of data from camp and brainstorm how they could visualize it in a different way  

o   i.e. Human Bingo is in a table but could be as a graph; Word Cloud for What is Data Science answers; Map of Where would you like to be  

·        Have a whiteboard and chat for each table to share what they created

  • Volunteers: Guide the conversation with your group, answer questions, and help them think through data visualization options

Frequently Asked Questions


The 2021 camp will be held virtually from July 13-16.  We’ll begin the program at 9 am and conclude around 12:30 pm each day.


NOTE: All camp slots for 2021 have been filled.  Please check back in January 2022 for information on next year’s camp.

Young women who attend schools within the State of Ohio and will be entering grades 8, 9, or 10 in autumn 2021 are encouraged to apply. However, any student in those grades attending school in Ohio may apply to attend. Students from Columbus City Schools and women from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply, and may be given first preference for camp slots.


The curriculum is very similar to that of our traditional, in-person camp.  We spend time each day highlighting where data comes from / how it can be used, learn from experts in the field, and work in small groups to give you hands-on experience with data analysis.  We’ll also spend time discussing gender and racial biases in data and hear from women who have overcome these negative stereotypes to become top experts in the field.  You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions of current college students, to help you decide if pursuing a degree in data or STEM is right for you.
