Data reveal possible smoking ban advantages

VuoloPicV2.2fa83cb5For policymakers wanting to discourage health-endangering smoking habits, TDA affiliate Mike Vuolo and two colleagues at Purdue have news: They found through analysis of nationwide data that smoking bans reduce smoking among more-casual tobacco users—potentially stopping them before they become heavy smokers—while high taxes are more effective deterrents with people who smoke more than a pack a day. Data was used from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, conducted by Ohio State’s Center for Human Resource Research for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and from the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation tobacco policy database.
