A look at TDA's future home

Historic Pomerene Hall to become collaborative data analytics hub

While TDA@OhioState awaits its new, state-of-the-art home in a renovated Pomerene Hall, new renderings provide a sneak peek at how the collaborative space—and the rest of the building—will look and function.

Beginning in April 2018, TDA and much of the university’s data analytics academic programming, including the two-year-old undergraduate major, will be headquartered in the historic building next to Mirror Lake. The renovation is part of a $53 million investment by the state of Ohio that recognizes the potential of data analytics at Ohio State to make a significant impact on Ohio’s economy and workforce.

Designed to be flexible and facilitate creativity among TDA members and partners, the new home of TDA will include configurable project rooms; software, hardware, visualization and ideation labs; hoteling workstations; coffee bars; and a variety of meeting rooms, offices and sitting areas. On the first floor, TDA will have space located conveniently near a new Shared Services “storefront” space occupied by OCIO, Wexner Medical Center, University Libraries and the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

“The idea is to have a place where our members and community partners can meet and work with each other that is accessible, welcoming and supported,” says TDA Program Manager David Mongeau. “Different teams have different requirements, depending on the project and the people involved. We’ll be able to provide the space, technology and access to talent they need to co-develop solutions using data analytics.”

Teams that work best with ice cream will be happy to know that in addition to the Department of History of Art, classrooms and event space, the new and improved Pomerene Hall will continue to house the Mirror Lake Creamery & Grill. Throughout the many conversations and decisions about the renovation project, Mongeau says, “everyone made sure the Creamery stayed right where it is.”
